The third is storage and handling that lets dirt or the wrong fluid get in. The fourth is a supply gap that leaves a depot short at the worst possible moment.

Monitor consumption so vehicles never run low

The most common cause is also the easiest to remove. Rather than leaving top-ups to individual drivers, track AdBlue use at fleet level, using telematics or tank monitoring where your vehicles support it. Bear in mind that consumption is not fixed. It climbs with load and with the constant stop start of multi-drop urban work, so a van on city rounds will get through more than the same van on steady motorway runs.

Build in a sensible buffer so a busy week never catches a vehicle out, and plan reordering around real usage rather than guesswork.

Use certified quality AdBlue every time

Quality has a direct line to uptime. AdBlue that sits outside the required 32.5 percent concentration, or that has picked up contamination, will not do its job in the SCR system, and it is a leading cause of the faults that put vehicles in the workshop. Those repairs are both slow and expensive.

This is where it matters whether your supplier makes the product or simply moves it. Buying from a manufacturer means batch testing and full traceability, so you know exactly what is going into your tanks.

Store and handle it properly at the depot

Most contamination happens on site, not in transit, so depot habits matter. Keep AdBlue in sealed, dedicated containers, and dispense it with clean equipment kept solely for the purpose rather than shared kit that has held other fluids. Protect it from heat, direct sunlight and freezing, all of which shorten its life, and rotate stock so older product is used first and nothing sits for too long. Secure a reliable, planned supply

A depot that runs dry stops vehicles just as surely as a faulty one. The fix is planned supply rather than reactive ordering. Scheduled or on demand bulk delivery keeps tanks topped up ahead of need, and holding the right mix of formats, from a bulk tank down to drums and cans, means there is always product to hand.

Get drivers on side

Some of the most avoidable faults come down to habits behind the wheel. Make sure drivers only ever top up with correctly specified AdBlue, and never improvise with water or an unknown product. Keep emergency cans in the vehicle on longer multi drop rounds where the depot is far away. Above all, encourage drivers to act on the dashboard warning at the first stage, when it is still a quick top up, rather than ignoring it until the vehicle derates and the round is already at risk.

Build it into a routine

None of this is complicated on its own.
